1 Philosophy of the model

A competency is not merely a label for a skill; it is a behaviour observable in a decision, a session or a record. The model prioritises client protection, quality of thinking and autonomy over the number of tools a coach can name.

2 The eight competencies

CodeCompetencyKey observable behaviours
C01Ethics and scopeExplains boundaries; protects confidentiality; notices risk; refers when needed; discloses conflicts.
C02Professional mindset and reflectionExamines bias; accepts feedback; uses supervision; does not defend interpretations as fact.
C03Contracting and client autonomyClarifies purpose; reviews the agreement; defines roles; returns the decision to the client.
C04Presence, listening and communicationListens for meaning and context; uses silence; summarises accurately; adapts language.
C05Enquiry and awarenessAsks one clear question; tests assumptions; distinguishes facts from interpretations.
C06Goals, action and accountabilityTurns awareness into experiments; sets review criteria; learns from inaction without blame.
C07Context, inclusion and systemsConsiders culture, power, organisation and accessibility; does not reduce systemic issues to the individual.
C08Evidence, development and growthDocuments learning; reviews impact; updates knowledge; does not overstate research.

3 Progression expectations

Tier T1: a safe, consistent foundation with openness to supervision. T2: integration of competencies across varied situations with greater autonomy. T3: precision in complex and specialist contexts and the ability to justify professional decisions. T4: advanced practice, teaching and supervision of others with robust governance of conflicts of interest.

4 Assessment rules

A critical failure in ethics or safety cannot be offset by high conversational-skill scores:

Unauthorised diagnosis.

Deliberate breach of confidentiality.

Exploitation in any form.

Fabrication of evidence.

Ignoring a clear, serious risk without managing it.
