1 Purpose and basis

This document is available as CPQLTD internal policy within the institutional standards pack and is designed to align the CPQLTD ecosystem with ISO/IEC 17024 principles relevant to bodies certifying persons. Procedural and numeric provisions shown in this available edition are CPQLTD internal requirements. Their publication is not a claim of accreditation, certification or recognition by ISO/IEC or any other external body.

Professional supervision recurs as a requirement across the pack (CPQLTD-STD, CPQLTD-CRED, CPQLTD-CPD, CPQLTD-ASSESSOR) without a standalone policy defining it and governing its eligibility, ratios and independence. This policy resolves that.

2 Definition of supervision and its distinctions

Professional supervision is a regular space to review cases, ethics, the practitioner’s impact, blind spots and professional learning. It differs from mentor coaching, which focuses on coaching-skill performance itself, and from assessment, which issues a judgement against a available standard. Supervision is developmental and supportive, not judgemental.

3 Supervisor eligibility

Holding a valid CPQLTD-T credential appropriate to the level supervised.

Sufficient documented practice experience after credentialing.

Completion of supervision training or a documented equivalent qualification.

No active recorded ethical breach.

Disclosure of any conflict of interest with those supervised.

4 Scope and functions of supervision

The developmental function: growing the practitioner’s competence and reflection.

The supportive function: safeguarding the practitioner’s professional wellbeing and preventing burnout.

The oversight function: protecting the client through review of ethics, scope and referral.

5 Ratios, frequency and documentation

Supervision hours are documented as evidence for a credential application and renewal. Indicative minimum thresholds (proposed for review, consistent with CPQLTD-CRED):

TierIndicative minimum supervisionFrequency
CPQLTD-T18 hoursRegular whilst building practice
CPQLTD-T210 hoursPeriodic
CPQLTD-T315 hoursPeriodic
CPQLTD-T420 hoursPeriodic, plus supervising others

Individual and group supervision are both accepted with controls; group supervision is documented so as to reflect each practitioner’s actual participation, not merely attendance.

6 Independence of supervision from assessment

A candidate’s supervisor may not be their assessor in the same credentialing decision, to safeguard impartiality (consistent with CPQLTD-IMP and CPQLTD-ASSESSOR). Any prior supervision relationship requiring the assessor’s recusal is disclosed.
